Veterinary Surgery
Surgical Services for Dogs & Cats
Although our holistic approach to veterinary care centres around prevention and less invasive treatments, there are times when surgery is the best option for your beloved pet.
Our team will talk you through the entire process and ensure that you fully understand why we are recommending surgery for your cat or dog. It is important to us that you feel fully informed and comfortable making the decision to go ahead with treatment.
At Pawsitive Veterinary Care, our goal is to help your pet stay healthy, happy and comfortably mobile, now and well into the future. The wide range of surgical procedures we offer helps us to achieve that goal.
Surgical Procedures
At Pawsitive Veterinary Care, we perform a variety of elective and non-elective surgeries to help treat diseases and conditions in pets or to repair injuries.
Our Kelowna veterinarians may perform or refer your pet out for the following procedures:
-
Spaying & Neutering
Spaying and neutering are very common surgical procedures performed to sterilize pets, prevent disease, and provide dogs and cats with an extended life expectancy.
-
Hormone Sparing Sterilization
Having your pet sterilized is an important aspect of being a pet owner. Traditional spay and neuters remove your pet's entire internal reproductive system which eliminates a lot of important hormones that help your pet grow and develop.
At Pawsitive Veterinary Care, our veterinarians perform hormone-sparing sterilization procedures to eliminate the risk of overpopulation of the pet population, while allowing your pet to reap the benefits of their natural hormones.
-
Orthopedic Surgery
Orthopedic surgeries correct injuries and conditions of the bones, ligaments, joints, tendons, and other skeletal structures in your pet. Common veterinary orthopedic surgeries include tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA), tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) and femoral head ostectomy (FHO).
-
Dental Surgery
Dental surgeries are performed to relieve mouth pain and restore good oral health to dogs and cats. These surgeries range from tooth extractions to gum disease treatment and jaw fracture repairs.
-
Soft Tissue Surgery
Soft tissue surgery is an umbrella term that covers almost all surgical procedures that aren't orthopedic. Ear, nose, and throat surgeries, mass removals and treatment of flesh wounds are all soft tissue procedures.
Hepatic, urogenital, oncological, cardiothoracic, gastrointestinal, and skin procedures are also considered soft tissue surgeries.
-
C-Sections
Cesarean sections are performed to surgically remove puppies or kittens from the mother's uterus. C-sections can be pre-scheduled if birthing complications are anticipated but are most often performed as emergency procedures when the mother is struggling to give birth naturally.
-
Ocular Surgery
Ocular surgery is performed to treat eye conditions. Some of the most common dog and cat ocular surgeries include eyelid tumour removal, cataract surgery, ectropion surgery, entropion surgery, exenteration of the orbit and cherry eye surgery.
-
Mass Removal
Masses can also develop on or under the skin, or inside a body cavity. Some masses may be removed simply for aesthetic purposes, but many are serious or even life-threatening and need to be removed for the sake of the pet's health.
-
Foreign Body Removal
Sometimes, foreign objects are ingested by pets and become lodged within the gastrointestinal tract. Other times, accidents leave glass or other materials stuck in a paw or other parts of a pet's body. Whether your pet has eaten an object they shouldn't have or an accident has left them injured we can perform foreign body surgery to remove it.
-
Wound Repair
Wounds occur when living tissue has been cut, broken, burnt, torn, or otherwise damaged. Wounds should be properly cleaned, disinfected, and cared for by a qualified veterinarian as soon as possible to avoid infection and other complications.
The Surgery Process
Before any surgery, we will complete a thorough pre-surgical assessment to help ensure that your pet is healthy enough to be given anesthesia. This assessment begins with giving your pet a physical examination, as well as any necessary blood tests.
During surgery, a dedicated nurse will administer anesthesia so your dog or cat is asleep and feels no pain during the procedure. They also track your cat or dog using electronic patient monitoring equipment.
Post-operative monitoring and pain management are our priorities directly following surgery. When your companion is ready to head home, we will provide detailed instructions for at-home care and how to administer prescribed medications.
Keeping Our Clinic Sterile
Surgical protocols at our clinic include dedicated surgical suites which are kept completely sterile to prevent infection and cross-contamination.
Our staff wear sterile attire at all times when they are in the surgical suite, and we carefully clean, sterilize and wrap our surgical instruments and equipment prior to every surgery.
