Hormone Sparing Sterilization

Hormone sparing sterilization can be used as an alternative to spaying or neutering. This technique helps reduce the number of unwanted pets while allowing your pet to maintain a more natural hormone cycle.

Non-Traditional Sterilization for Dogs

Spaying or neutering has always been highly recommended as it is a way to keep the pet population under control and keep our beloved companions healthier. For the most part, this recommendation is still true, but that doesn't mean there aren't alternatives that can provide benefits as well.

At Pawsitive Veterinary Care, we perform hormone-sparing sterilization procedures for dogs so that reproductive hormones, which aid in your pet's mental and physical growth and development, are not eliminated.

Because there are some risks involved with hormone sparing sterilization, you should discuss hormone sparing sterilization with your veterinarian to make sure this is the right option for your pup.

Spaying & Neutering

If you feel that hormone sparing sterilization is not the right approach for the lifestyle and health care needs of your companion, we also offer traditional spay and neuters.

Types of Hormone Sparing Sterilization

At Pawsitive Veterinary Care, we perform the following procedures:

Vasectomy

In the male dog, the spermatic cords are severed. This allows the pet to continue to produce testosterone but prevents him from fathering litters.

Hysterectomy

In the female dog, the uterus can be removed to prevent the ability to have puppies, but still leave the ovaries (traditionally both ovaries and uterus are removed in a spay procedure).

The Risks Associated with Hormone Sparing Sterilization

While hormone sparing sterilization can offer benefits for your growing puppy, you need to be mindful of some behavioural and medical issues that can arise by allowing reproductive hormones to continue to be produced.

Reproductive hormones such as urine marking, aggression and roaming may be a bit more prevalent than in traditionally altered dogs but can be managed.

Your female dog will also display ongoing sexual behaviours, including heat cycles, but it will be less apparent after hormone sparing sterilization, and no bleeding will be noted.

Female pets who have the hormone-sparing sterilization also face an increased risk, albeit small, of cancer within the reproductive system, including mammary gland cancer, but will not get pyometra, a uterine infection, as they have no uterus.
