Cat & Dog Wellness Exams
Promoting Optimal Health
Whether you prefer a holistic approach to your pet's care or a more conventional approach, regular checkups are critical to helping your dog or cat maintain good long-term physical health.
These exams allow us to regularly assess and monitor your companion's health and then take a dynamic whole-body approach to improving their overall health and quality of life.
Routine exams also allow us to detect early signs of developing issues. When caught early, we can create an integrative treatment plan before your pet's medical condition becomes severe.
When combined with proper nutrition, holistic therapies and conventional medicine, routine physical checkups help to give your pet their best chance at excellent lifelong health.
What to Expect During an Exam
During your companion's routine exam at Pawsitive Veterinary Care, your veterinarian will give your dog or cat a thorough physical checkup to get a comprehensive picture of their overall health.
Based on the findings from your pet's physical examination, your veterinarian will speak to you about preventive care strategies to help maintain and sustain long-term pet health and vitality.
Pet checkups at our Kelowna veterinary clinic typically include an examination of each of the following elements of your pet's health:
-
General Condition
The general demeanour and physical condition of your furry family member can provide us with vital clues to their overall health. How your dog or cat stands and walks, their level of alertness, and whether they are a healthy weight for their size are all important indicators of overall health.
-
Coat & Skin
The veterinarian will examine your dog or cat's skin and coat for signs of problems, including excessive oiliness or dryness, lumps, bumps, dandruff, parasites or abnormal hair loss.
-
Face & Head
Your pet's eyes, ears, and nose will be closely examined to check for any abnormalities or unusual discharge in these areas.
-
Teeth & Mouth
The veterinarian will check your furry friend's teeth and mouth for symptoms of oral health problems such as plaque buildup or periodontal disease. Professional dental care may be recommended as preventive care or treatment for existing problems.
-
Internal Health
Heart rate and rhythm, pulse, and blood pressure are essential elements of your pet's cardiovascular health. We'll check these to ensure they're normal. The lungs will then be listened to, to check for evidence of abnormal breathing.
Lymph nodes will be checked for pain or swelling, and the abdomen will be palpated to ensure the intestines, kidneys, bladder, spleen, liver, and stomach all feel normal, and that your pet is not exhibiting any signs of discomfort.
Checkups for Puppies & Kittens
To help get your pet off to a healthy start in life, we highly recommend that you schedule a visit very shortly after acquiring your new fur baby. There are many aspects of puppy and kitten care that you can really help with long-term good health and behaviour and are critical to start at a young age. This allows you to provide the very best care right from your pet's earliest days, to help them achieve optimal health and well-being later in life.
At your pet's first visit, our team will perform a detailed physical examination of your new fur baby and provide immunizations and deworming medication as necessary. We will also test for intestinal parasites.
Regularly scheduled wellness exams allow your veterinarian to monitor your furry friend's health as they develop and mature, and provide age-specific diet and lifestyle recommendations to help your pet thrive.
Twice Yearly Checkups for Seniors
As pets enter their senior years, regular examinations every six months and proactive care play an increasingly important role in ensuring their continuing good health and longevity. During your senior companion's wellness exam, your veterinarian will be watching for signs of potential age-related conditions, such as diabetes, arthritis or decreased vision.
Additional lab testing may be recommended for aging pets. These tests give us a more detailed picture of their health and provide us with the vital information we need to create personalized health plans to address existing conditions and prevent the development of new issues.
