Nutraceuticals
Using Food as Medicine
A nutraceutical is a food or food product that provides health and medical benefits. Common nutraceuticals include substances such as vitamins, glucosamine, probiotics and plant extracts.
At Pawsitive Veterinary Care, our holistic approach to caring for the health of our patients includes incorporating nutraceuticals into individual treatment plans to prevent illness and degenerative disorders.
Following a comprehensive physical evaluation, we may recommend adding whole food concentrates, mineral mixes, dehydrated berries and vegetables or fish oils into your dog or cat's diet.
Some nutraceuticals such as probiotics may be recommended for short-term use, whereas others may be prescribed as part of your pet's lifelong strategy for improved health.
The Benefits of Veterinary Nutraceuticals
Nutraceuticals have a broad spectrum of effects, including immune regulation; anti-microbial effects against bacteria, fungi, or parasites; support of normal organ structure, function, or blood supply; and enhancement of normal metabolic processes.
Most are safe to use in conjunction with traditional medications and make an excellent compliment to other holistic therapies.
Nutraceuticals typically have fewer side effects than conventional medications when used to treat disease and may provide benefits not available from standard drug therapies.
FAQs About Nutraceuticals
Curious about the ways nutraceuticals might benefit your furry friend? To learn more, read through the answers to our frequently asked questions about nutraceuticals for pets:
-
How successful is nutraceutical therapy?
As with many conventional treatments, success will vary depending on the patient's health issue, the treatment being used and other variables.
Your veterinarian may be able to recommend a nutraceutical therapy that can help manage your pet's disease without including other treatments. In other cases, nutraceuticals may be helpful as a supplement to conventional treatments or other holistic approaches to care.
-
How will nutraceuticals interact my pets medication?
Nutraceuticals are generally considered safe, but it is important to consult your veterinarian before giving your dog or cat nutraceuticals. These foods and food products may cause side effects or interactions with other medications. In some cases, safety research is lacking in terms of treating pets.
Your veterinarian will discuss the risks and benefits of use with you so that you can make an informed decision about your companion's nutraceutical treatment.
-
Where do I obtain nutraceuticals and do I need a prescription?
Supplements are not regulated, this is why we recommend always consulting a veterinarian before giving your pet nutraceuticals.
Quality may vary between manufacturers and some poor quality supplements may not contain the labeled type or amount of ingredients. Prescriptions are not necessary for most nutraceutical supplements, however, a veterinarian familiar with these products may recommend preferred brands or reputable sources of nutraceuticals.
